Martillo Island Penguin Tours

Gentoo and Magellanic penguins share a low, pebbly island in the Beagle Channel, about an hour and a half east of Ushuaia by road. Only one company may land visitors there for a guided walk; every other trip watches from the water. We compared three tours, from a small boat out of a fishing village to a full day that puts you on the beach with the birds, and wrote down the catch in each.

  • Both species: roughly October to MarchGentoos stay around the island all year, and the Magellanics join them for the southern spring and summer
  • Sail on your first full dayWind on the channel can keep every boat in port, so book early in your stay and leave a spare day behind it

In a hurry? Our top pick is Azul Latina's full day with the walk on Martillo Island: ~$530 a person for about eight hours, with an hour on foot among the penguins and a Beagle Channel cruise on the same day. Book it here.

Which Martillo Island penguin tour should you book?

Picture a friend landing in Ushuaia tonight and asking us which penguin trip to take. Over a hot chocolate on San Martín street, this is what we would say.

If you can afford it, book Azul Latina's full day with the penguin walk, from ~$530. It is the only tour of the three that lets you step onto Martillo Island, where you spend about an hour on foot with a guide while gentoos and Magellanics go about their business a few metres away. A Beagle Channel cruise fills the other half of the day.

Watching from a boat costs far less. Canoero's catamaran leaves the tourist pier in town for about five hours at ~$230, with sea lions and the Les Eclaireurs lighthouse on the way. Explore Tierra del Fuego's small boat drives you to Puerto Almanza first and then gets close to the shore with no more than 15 people, from ~$150.

None of them can promise a calm channel. See what each tour costs once the pesos are added and whether the walk is right for you, check how each day is spent, then read the small print we pulled out before you pay.

Our pick

The penguin day we would book: Azul Latina's walk

Of all the Martillo tours, this is the one that puts your boots on the island. It costs more than twice the boats, and the booking is strict, but nothing else on the channel gets you this close.

You check in at the tourist port in Ushuaia, at 8:00 am for the 8:30 am departure or at 10:00 am for the 10:30 am one. The agency tells you which after you book, depending on space.

On the early departure a bus takes you east to Estancia Harberton, the old sheep farm that faces the island. From there a rigid inflatable boat crosses in about 15 minutes, and a guide walks you around Martillo for about an hour among gentoo and Magellanic penguins.

The other half of the day is a cruise along the Beagle Channel, past Bird Island, Sea Lion Island and the red-and-white Les Eclaireurs lighthouse. On the later departure the order flips: the cruise first, the walk next, the bus back to town last.

How the early departure runs, step by step

This is the order the listing gives for the 8:30 am start. The wind on the channel and the boat crossing can stretch or shorten any leg.

Out of Ushuaia by road

  • Check in at the tourist port at 8:00 am
  • Bus east along Route 3 and Route J to Estancia Harberton
  • Rigid inflatable boat to Martillo Island, about 15 minutes

On the island, then the channel

  • About 1 hour on foot among gentoo and Magellanic penguins
  • Cruise west past Bird Island, Sea Lion Island and Les Eclaireurs lighthouse
  • Back at the tourist dock in Ushuaia

What the price covers

The fare pays for the boats and the walk. The estancia door and the port charge to the pesos in your pocket.

Included

  • The guided walk of about an hour
  • The Beagle Channel cruise to the islands and the lighthouse

  • Port fee, 6,000 Argentine pesos a person

Between us, before you go

A word from one windblown traveler to another. The booking is not finished when you pay: the agency asks for every traveler's full name, date of birth, nationality, passport number and WhatsApp number, and confirms within 48 hours. Send them straight away.

Estancia Harberton closes on Tuesdays, so on that day there is no museum visit. One reviewer was sent to the port building when the company's hut was about 400 m (a quarter mile) away, so read your voucher twice. What the hour on the island looks like.

Why it beats the boats

From a boat you watch the colony across a strip of water. On the walk you stand on the same beach, crouched low, while the penguins decide how close to come. It also packs a channel cruise and a farm with a long history into the same day. Walk or boat, set side by side.

What you give up is flexibility. GetYourGuide sells it as non-refundable, and the time is confirmed only after you book.

Who we would not send on it

Anyone with limited mobility, whom the listing turns away. Travelers on a tight budget, who will be happy on the small boat from Puerto Almanza. And cruise passengers with a fixed all-aboard time, who should look at our cruise stop guide first.

Book it if

You want to be on the island, not beside it. An hour on foot with the penguins, a guide who keeps everyone at a respectful distance and a cruise past the sea lions make this a whole day out. It suits couples and keen photographers. Older children do well too, if they can stand still.

How to choose

How to pick the right Martillo tour

The penguins are the same for all three. What differs is whether you land, the boat that takes you and how much of the day goes on getting there.

Landing

Only Azul Latina's day puts you on the island. The catamaran and the small boat stop offshore. Walk or boat.

Species

Gentoos with orange bills stay all year, while Magellanics with banded chests come for the warm months. Now and then a lone king turns up. Telling them apart.

Sea legs

Canoero's listing warns off anyone prone to seasickness. The walk has a 15-minute crossing, the small boat about an hour and a half on the water. Wind and the boats.

Budget

From ~$150 for the small boat to ~$530 for the walk, before the pesos for the estancia and the port. Every price in one table.

Group size

The small boat takes 15 people and the walk 20. The catamaran carries many more, and reviewers mention a crowd at the rail. The small boats.

Before you go

Eight things about Martillo tours that no listing puts in big letters

None of these sits at the top of a booking page. Each one can decide whether your day ends with a camera full of penguins or a wasted morning at the wrong pier.

What you should know

  1. Only one tour lands. A photo of people on the beach with penguins means the walk. The catamaran and the small boat stay on the water the whole time. Which to pick.
  2. The walk cannot be cancelled for a refund. GetYourGuide sells Azul Latina's day as non-refundable. You get your money back only if the agency cannot run it.
  3. Pesos on top. On the walk you pay 60,000 Argentine pesos at Harberton if it is open, plus a port fee of 6,000 a person. The listing says the figures can change. The full costs.
  4. Harberton shuts on Tuesdays. Both walk listings say so. On a Tuesday your day skips the farm museum, so pick another day if the whale bones matter to you. The estancia.
  5. The wind runs the timetable. One catamaran reviewer had two cancellations in a week. Put the boat on your first full day so a lost sailing leaves a second chance. If the boat stays in port.
  6. Find the right hut. Several companies share the waterfront. A walk reviewer was sent to the port building, and catamaran reviewers queued to swap a QR code for a ticket. Arrive early.
  7. The van is part of the small-boat day. Explore Tierra del Fuego's trip spends about three of its five hours on the road to Puerto Almanza and back. Reviewers liked the drive, but count it in.
  8. Dress for the deck, not the town. The best views on the catamaran are outside, and the channel wind cuts through a fleece. What to wear.

★★★★★Walk on the island, 8 h

We had the 8:30 am start, so the bus came first: forest, peat bogs, then the dirt road down to Harberton. The boat over to Martillo took about a quarter of an hour. Our guide lined us up on the beach and told us to crouch and wait, and within a minute two gentoos walked straight past our boots on their way to the water. The cruise back to Ushuaia in the afternoon, past the sea lions and the lighthouse, felt like a second trip thrown in.

We booked the 10:30 am departure, so we cruised out first and saw cormorants packed onto the rocks around the lighthouse. A couple of hours later we were at Harberton and crossing to the island in an inflatable. The penguins ignored us completely, which was the best part. The museum of bones at the estancia was shut the day we went, so ask about it when the agency confirms your time.

Our first boat was cancelled for wind, so we were glad we had booked it on our first day in Ushuaia. Two days later the channel was calmer and the catamaran ran. The guide narrated in English and Spanish, and the audio guide covered the rest. At Martillo the captain held the boat off the beach for a long time while the penguins came and went along the shore. Bring a warm hat for the deck, because the wind out there does not care that it is summer.

Three hours of the five are in the van, which the listing does say, so it was no surprise. The stop at a lagoon, with our guide talking about beavers, helped break up the drive. On the water we had about half an hour at the penguins, close and quiet, with sea lions on the way back. Good, if pricey for the time with the birds.

★★★★★Small boat from Almanza

The drive out along Route J felt like leaving the town behind for real: forest, a lake, a fishing village at the end. From Almanza the little boat bounced across to Martillo, and our guide called out every time a group of penguins was about to come out of the water. We saw both kinds, plus a single king standing apart from the rest, which our guide said happens now and then. Dress warmly, though they hand out extra layers.

Good to know

Why the penguins come to Martillo, and what you are watching

Five minutes of reading helps you tell the two kinds of bird apart and follow the comings and goings at the waterline. It also explains the farm across the water.

Martillo Island is a low, flat island in the Beagle Channel, roughly 85 km (53 miles) by road east of Ushuaia, just off the shore of Estancia Harberton. It hosts a mixed colony: Magellanic penguins by the thousand in the warm months, and gentoos that stay around it all year.

01Two penguins, one beach

The gentoo has a bright orange-red bill and a white patch over each eye. The Magellanic has two black bands across a white chest and a pale stripe curling over its head. On the island you often see both standing in the same group. How to tell them apart.

02A farm on the shore

Estancia Harberton faces the island across a narrow strip of water. The missionary Thomas Bridges founded it in 1886, and the walking tour crosses to Martillo from its jetty. A small museum of whale and bird bones sits on the farm. The estancia, in brief.

03One company on the island

Landings are limited to a single licensed operator, which takes small groups onto the island with a guide who sets the route and the distance. Every other trip, however small the boat, watches the colony from offshore.

The moment most people remember is crouching on the pebbles and letting a gentoo decide to walk past you.

04Traffic at the waterline

Penguins spend their days going between the colony and the sea to feed, so there is a constant procession at the shore. Watch for groups gathering at the water's edge before they plunge in, and others shooting out of the shallows onto the pebbles.

05Now and then, a king

The odd king penguin turns up among the others, taller and marked with orange on the neck. It is a lucky sighting, never something a tour can promise. When to go.

06Manners around the colony

Penguins have right of way. On the walk the guide sets the distance and the pace; never touch or feed a bird, and step back if one heads your way. On the boats, keep your voice low at the rail. What to wear for the channel covers the wind out there.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions about Martillo Island penguin tours

Fourteen questions we hear again and again, with the full answer.

How much does a Martillo Island penguin tour cost?

The three tours here start at ~$150 per person for the small boat from Puerto Almanza and ~$230 for Canoero's catamaran. The walk on the island with Azul Latina costs ~$530, plus 60,000 Argentine pesos at Harberton if it is open and a 6,000-peso port fee. Every price and extra is in our cost guide.

Can you walk on Martillo Island?

Yes, but only with the one licensed operator, and only on a guided walk of about an hour. Azul Latina's full day includes that walk. The catamaran and the small boat watch from the water and never land. The walk in detail.

Which tour should I pick?

For most people who can afford it, the walk, since it is the only way onto the island. For a lower price and free cancellation, Canoero's catamaran from the pier in town. For a small group close to the shore, the boat from Puerto Almanza.

When is the best time to see the penguins?

Roughly October to March, when the Magellanics join the gentoos. December to February tend to be the fullest weeks, with chicks about. Gentoos stay around the island all year, according to the small-boat listing. The season in detail.

How long does a tour take?

About eight hours for the walk with the cruise, and about five for each boat tour. The small boat spends about three of its five hours in a van, and about 30 minutes at the colony, by one reviewer's count.

Are penguins guaranteed?

Gentoos are around the island all year and Magellanics in their season, but no tour can promise how many birds stand on the beach or that the boat will sail. King penguins turn up now and then and are never a given.

What happens if the wind cancels the boat?

The two boat tours cancel free up to 24 hours ahead. On the walk, GetYourGuide refunds in full only if the agency cannot run it. One catamaran reviewer lost two sailings in a week, so book early in your stay. When the boats stay in port.

What is the difference between gentoo and Magellanic penguins?

Gentoos have an orange-red bill and a white patch over each eye, and are around Martillo all year. Magellanics have black bands across a white chest. They nest in burrows and come for the warm months. The two compared.

How close do you get to the penguins?

On the walk you stand on the same beach, a few metres away, with a guide setting the distance. The small boat gets close to the shore. The catamaran is bigger and stays further off, though penguins are still clear on a phone camera.

Can children and people with limited mobility come?

The walk is not for people with limited mobility, pregnant travelers, wheelchair users or babies under one. GetYourGuide lists Canoero's catamaran as wheelchair accessible. The small boat is not for wheelchair users or people with back or heart problems.

What should I wear?

A windproof and waterproof shell over a warm layer, a hat that stays on and gloves, plus shoes with grip for the beach. The small boat hands out warm clothes. Bring your passport or ID. What to wear on the channel.

Will I get seasick?

Maybe, if the channel is rough. Canoero's listing says its catamaran is not for people prone to seasickness. The walk has only a 15-minute crossing to the island, plus the cruise. Take a tablet before you board, not once you feel it.

Is hotel pickup included?

Don't count on it. The walk and the small boat both say hotel transfers are not included, and Canoero's listing is unclear about it. All three start in the center of town. The walk leaves from the tourist port and the catamaran from the tourist dock, while the small boat uses a fixed meeting point on Roca street.

Can I cancel for free?

On the two boat tours, yes, up to 24 hours before, and you can reserve now and pay later. The walk is non-refundable on GetYourGuide, so check the terms on Viator too before you pay.
